An evergreen shrub or small tree that produces small, slightly fragrant yellow flowers in the spring and summer. Its dense foliage provides coverage for birds and other small wildlife. The entire plant, especially the leaves when crushed, emits an anise- or licorice-scented fragrance. DUE NOTE, that does not mean this plant is edible, the Florida Wildlife Foundation notes it could still be toxic.
